Windows users are one step closer to getting a major system facelift -- and if today's release of Microsoft's latest OS build tells us anything, it's that the company is putting the system's strongest focus on lean and mean Metro apps.
Flame Malware Scorches Systems Across the Middle East
A cyberweapon of unprecedented sophistication is ripping through computer systems in the Middle East, security vendor Kaspersky Lab claims. It has dubbed the malware "Worm.Win32.Flame" -- or "Flame," for short. Other security vendors, including McAfee and Symantec, have issued similar warnings.

Samsung Galaxy S III to hit Canada June 20, 2 GB of RAM confirmed
Samsung has announced that the Galaxy S III will be hitting the stores in Canada come June 20. They've also outed the exact specs of the Canadian models, and which carriers will be seeing it. (We could get used to this sort of press release). First, the who -- The SGH-i747 model (that's the LTE version) will be headed to Bell Mobility, Virgin Mobile, SaskTel, TELUS and Rogers Wireless. The SGH-iT999 model (that's HSPA+42 for those playing at home) is going to Videotron, Wind and Mobilicity. For pricing and other details, Samsung refers everyone to the carrier in question.
If things stay the same from Samsung as they have been since, well forever, south of the border in the states the i747 will be headed to AT&T, and the iT999 is destined for T-Mobile. Reminder -- this hasn't been confirmed. It's just based off the first two Galaxy S launches from Sammy.
Now for the fun part, the specs. There's a few differences here from the international version we saw last month, so read carefully. We'll talk about them after.

Besides the change from the quad-core Exynos to the Qualcomm S4 that we expected, there's two big eye-poppers there. One good -- the Canadian versions (and we're going to assume the US versions, see disclaimer above) will have 2 GB of RAM. The other (not so good) is the lack of the 64GB option, and the iT999 comes only in a 16GB version. While that may be enough for most folks, we know it's not going to suit everybody. We'll keep an ear out for more info about the rest of North America, but for now, enjoy Canada!

Second-gen IOIO in the works: embraces the wireless revolution, cuts cost
Ytai Ben-Tsvi's IOIO board is quite the hit with the Android-hacking DIY crowd. But, that doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement on the $50 dev board. A second-gen version is in the works that adds the ability to connect to a computer as a USB device (not just as a host) or via Bluetooth, without the need for a intermediary controller like an Arduino. Perhaps most exciting for those interested in tinkering with DIY Android phone accessories, is the plan to cut the price of the new IOIO. Microsoft Launches Office 365 For Government
Google scored an important win over Microsoft a few weeks ago when it won a $35 million U.S. government contract to bring its cloud-based office solution to the Department of the Interior. Microsoft's legacy solutions, of course, remain a staple in government offices, but as more and more agencies want to move their productivity and collaboration services to the cloud, Microsoft is running the risk of losing out in this lucrative market. Today, however, the company is launching a new service that should give more of its government customers, which tend to have very strict data security and privacy regulations, the option to move to the cloud. Facebook Is a Fraud
I've been up to my armpits talking about Facebook for most of this month, and maybe because I'm unusually dense, just realized that Facebook is a new kind of dot-com. By this I mean its revenue and profit are based on a series of false beliefs. Unlike the first dot-coms, which failed, Facebook does have revenue and profit, but just like them it has been built on a stack of false assumptions.

Firefox 4 rockets to 5% global usage share, IE9 wallows at 1.5%
Interestingly, we can see IE9 dipping between March 20 and 21, just before the 'Important' Windows Update rolled out. It's hard to say whether IE9 is only growing because of the installed-by-default Windows Update, but that small dip definitely sticks out -- did excitement peter out? Did people download IE9, try it out, and summarily uninstall it? Perhaps, given their close proximity, the stats show an attention shift from Microsoft to Mozilla?
Numbers-wise, if the bottom left corner of the graph shows 2.3 million downloads for IE9, we can guesstimate that that it has now been downloaded 5 million times. Firefox is clocking in at 37 million downloads after five days of public availability.
We wonder whether Microsoft knew its release schedule would coincide so closely with Firefox 4. Internet Explorer 9 -- a great browser by almost every metric -- was never going to do well against anything emanating from the maws of Mozilla. The main thing, though, is that Microsoft has now shown that it's serious when it comes to the Open Web. If Internet Explorer 10 is good, and 11 and 12, then we might finally see it compete with the zealous Mozillan horde.

Microsoft trumpets Windows Phone 7 numbers on first birthday
Microsoft is quick to take a couple shots at competitors' app stores, beating its chest about not re-counting tanslations of an app or "lite" apps, "increasing tonnage" by supporting apps from other mobile platforms, and not listing wallpapers as a category.
That's all fine and dandy, but we spend a lot of time sifting through WP7 app feeds -- and we're still not seeing a lot of awesome apps on the platform. We think a few marquee apps would've made a pretty nice first birthday present -- along with a much smoother update process for WP7 users.

What?s In A Name? Nintendo Seems To Be Sticking With Calling Its Next-Gen System Wii U
Nintendo unveiled the tablet-centric Wii U at last year's E3. At the time the company was clear that it was a working name. A report earlier this year stated that Nintendo was exploring other options. E3 kicks off next week and it seems increasingly likely that Nintendo is sticking with the unusual moniker. First off, Nintendo just launched a Wii U Facebook campaign complete with an intro video with Reggie Fils-Aime welcoming guests to the Wii U page. LG Display debuts five-inch Retina Display killer with 1080p HD resolution and 440ppi pixel density
Smartphone displays are becoming larger in size, and along with that, we're seeing a nice trend that's bringing greater pixel density. While LG Display's newly-announced 1080p HD mobile display isn't the most pixel dense that we've seen -- a distinction that belongs to Toshiba -- the five-inch panel is more appropriate for consumer applications and boasts an impressive pixel density of 440ppi. Its 16:9 aspect ratio was designed with HD content in mind, and the LCD technology isn't anything to sneeze at, either: it's a variant of IPS known as Advanced High Performance In-Plane Switching (AH-IPS), which is said to boast wide viewing angles, fast response times and improved brightness efficiency. Best yet, it seems that consumers won't have long to wait before the panel works its way into consumer technology -- the five-inch HD display is set for availability during the second-half of this year. How would you change Samsung's Galaxy Player 4.0?
Samsung's sub-$200 Galaxy Player offers up PMP-stylings inside a smartphone shell. When our reviewer put it through its paces, we couldn't find much to commend it -- with poor sound quality and battery life that wouldn't manage a long-haul flight. The expandable storage and removable battery made it more desirable than the equivalent iPod touch, but given that it was retailing for $20 more (at the time), we'd have said go for a GoGear or D3 instead. But we suspect that despite our advice, some of you bought one, so tell us how you've found it on a daily basis and what should the company do when it comes time for a refresh?

Color vulnerable to simple GPS hack, lets you spy on anyone, anywhere
Color, the $41-million-in-funding location-oriented photo sharing startup, is susceptible to simple GPS spoofing. With nothing more than a jailbroken iPad or iPhone, you can use FakeLocation to trick Color into thinking you're somewhere else. Within seconds you can be browsing photos that were snapped thousands of miles away. With a little digging, you can pore through photos not intended for your eyes.Of course, such a hack isn't illegal as such -- every photo you take with Color is public. With FakeLocation you are simply circumventing Color's very limited location-oriented security mechanism. It does undermine Color's usefulness (and uniqueness), though -- if nefarious types can sit in their bedroom or basement and eavesdrop on classy dinner parties and wild night club soirees, people might be less inclined to share personal photos with those around them.
Fortunately, both for Color and its users, this is an easy security hole to plug -- at least in the short term. The app (or server-side) code simply checks to see if the user has 'teleported' an impossibly large distance, without any intermediate steps in between. In the long term, though, Color's users must be aware that its social graph is completely public. Color's users must realize that every photo they upload is visible by anyone, from any place.

Oppo's super-skinny Finder smartphone gets many more details, should reach pre-orders June 6th (video)
The last time we saw Oppo's 6.65mm-thick smartphone, it was playing hard to get: we didn't see much more than its svelte profile. Oppo is now being a little more forthcoming, both officially and otherwise. It's now teasing the device as the Finder, and some escaped details explain just how it's getting to that Ascend P1 S-busting dimension as well as where it sits in the smartphone pantheon. TGBus understands the Finder should use a familiar-sounding 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen -- much thinner than an LCD -- as well as a dual-core 1.5GHz processor of an unspecified make and the virtually pre-requisite 8-megapixel rear and 1.3-megapixel front cameras. The lot should run on a customized version of Android 4.0. If all goes to the still somewhat unofficial plan, the Finder could be ready for pre-orders on June 6th at a not-insignificant ¥3,999 ($631) off-contract. We're mostly waiting on in-store dates and the possibility of snapping one up without a long flight to China.

Samsung Galaxy S III heading to T-Mobile U.S. on June 20?
The Samsung Galaxy S III is still real hot news, and quite rightly so. As we approach the impending international launch -- starting May 29 in case you forgot -- the big release date questions are still coming from eager Android fans in the US. According to a rumor posted by TmoNews, ?for T-Mobile at least, the wait might not be too much longer.
Apparently, the Pebble Blue variant of the Galaxy S III, in both 16GB and 32GB form, will be available from June 20. The 16GB Ceramic White version will then follow on July 11. This follows on from the leaked June 20 graphics showing availability north of the border in Canada. (And this latest leak also pegs the Galaxy Note for July 11, so there's that.)
Big disclaimer though folks as usual, this is a huge old scoop of rumor. Nothing short of what we'd expect with such a massive launch as this one. But Samsung did show off an enormous "U.S. in June" slide at the London keynote, so there is a possibility of there being something behind this one.
