Internet Explorer 9 nears 4% share on Windows 7, IE6 extinction countdown picks up steam

internet explorer 9 ie9
Microsoft has shared some news about the state of its most and least loved Web browsers -- Internet Explorer 9 and 6, respectively. Even with IE9 only recently exiting beta, Microsoft reports that 3.6% of Windows 7 users are now running the new browser (no mention of Vista... what's with that?). The post also reveals that the adoption rate is almost five times what IE8 garnered in the early going.

It's also interesting to note that there are now more than 1,000 sites utilizing Internet Explorer 9's Windows 7 integration features -- like the new desktop notification support we showed you in Hotmail.

But perhaps the best news of all is that Microsoft's IE6countdown.com now has more than 400 partners and is generating nearly two million pageviews per month, helping to lure users away from the woefully out-of-date browser. Can the end come soon enough, DS readers?

Exercise Makes You Smarter By Giving Your Brain Extra Energy [Exercise]

Everyone knows exercise is good for you, and studies have previously shown that it can boost learning and even stave off dementia in later life—though nobody knew why. New research suggests, though, that it's because the brain takes advantage of energy delivery systems just as much as your muscles. More »

CNBC: Quad-core iPad 3 with LTE to be unveiled in New York (update: not New York)

The above tweet from CNBC says it all, really. Apparently sources close to the news network have revealed that the iPad 3 will be unveiled in New York rather than the traditional West Coast unveiling of previous products. It's interesting to note that the recent Mountain Lion briefings and Education event were both based in the Big Apple, lending some weight to the claim. Although company expert Jim Dalrymple has already rebutted the broadcaster's claim about the location. The rest? Well, it certainly tallies with the most recent crop of rumors, but when it's Apple-silly season we won't believe anything until we see it.

Update: Here it comes. The official invitations have been sent out by the company to an event in San Francisco on March 7th.

AVG launches LiveKive cloud sync and backup tool

avg livekive dropbox
A while back, we told you about AVG's new LiveKive service, a new cloud synchronization and backup tool which appears to have been named after a vat in which mash is made during the brewing process. But enough about AVG's odd choice of monikers -- LiveKive has launched and is now ready to accept your files into the AVG cloud.

LiveKive takes aim at services like Dropbox and SugarSync, though at the moment it's lagging behind in terms of features. As it stands, LiveKive is only compatible with Windows and OS X. There are no mobile clients yet, though with AVG's strong presence on Android we wouldn't be surprised to see an app arrive in the near future.

The company is offering a heck of a deal right now, however. If you sign up for a paid account during the launch phase, you can score unlimited storage for $80 for a whole year. You can't even score 50GB per year at that price from Dropbox, so if cost and space are more important to you than cross-platform availability, LiveKive might be worth checking out.

If you're not interested in ponying up any cash at the moment, you can still get a 5GB account free of charge. Just head on over, and create a LiveKive account.

webOS 3.0 beta now available to developers

hp touchpad webos 3.0
With the webOS 3.0 SDK available for almost two months, HP has now given developers access to a beta download of webOS 3.0 -- which powers the upcoming TouchPad and will likely ride along on HP desktops and laptops in the form of an emulator.

Right now, the webOS 3.0 beta is only available to Early Access developers. The crew at PreCentral states that HP appears to have eased up on access restrictions, however, so hopefully more devs will get on board and those of you who are planning to buy a TouchPad in the next couple months will have plenty of slick webOS 3.0 apps to install on your new tablet.

ASUS announces two new Transformer tablets, finally shows off Padfone

ASUS Transformer Infinity Series 700

ASUS this morning at Mobile World Congress just dropped a bombshell of a tablet on us with its new Transformer Pad Infinity Series. The Transformer Pad Infinity Series 700 is going to leave you feeling a bit moist. The 10-inch IPS display has a 1920x1200 resolution at 600 nits. It's powered either by a quad-core Tegra 3 chipset at 1.6 GHz (for the Wifi-only version), or dual-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm MSM 8960 Snapdragon S4 Krait if it's rocking 3G/4G radios. It's a mere 8.5 mm thick as well, and features an optoinal keyboard dock, for which ASUS has made quite the name for itself.

Android Central at Mobile World Congress ASUS also finally showed of the Padfone (it having been teased for a good year or so, it feels like). It's a 4.3-inch smartphone powered by a new Qualcomm dual-core Krait processor (same as in the Infinity 700), has an 8-megapixel camera and slips into an optional Padfone Station that turn it into a 10.1 in tablet with five times the battery life. The Padfone Station in turn has an optional keyboard dock that turns the whole thing into an Android laptop.

ASUS also announced the new Transformer Pad 300, an updated tablet it's billing as the ideal mobile web surfing and gaming platform. It's got an NVIDIA® Tegra® 3 quad-core processor and 10.1-inch IPS diaplay at 1280x800 resolution. It's got options for LTE or Wifi-only. Battery life is billed at 10 hours, or 15 hours with an optional keyboard dock.

We've got more pics and the full press release after the break. Stay tuned for some hands-on action!

Fish are lazy, naive, easily led by robots (video)

Robotic fish leads real fish on merry journey
What does a fish look for in a leader? No doubt a nice fishy smell is important, and maybe a sense of direction too, but the overriding factor happens to be something much simpler, and indeed simple enough for a robot to mimic. Our old friend Maurizio Porfiri and a colleague from New York's Polytechnic Institute have shown that a fish-bot will quickly attract live followers if it has a nice, fluid swimming motion. When the stroke is just right, real fish will pull up alongside and visibly relax their own motion to conserve energy, just like geese flying at the rear of a 'vee' formation. It's hoped that, in the future, robots might be used to guide endangered fish populations away from oil spills and other calamities, in much the same way as battery-powered leaders have guided humanity since the dawn of time (allegedly).
