Rdio goes minimalist, tries another redesign on for size

Finally get settled into the last Rdio redesign from just a few months ago? Well, we're afraid you've got a bit more adjusting to do. The streaming music service has now rolled out another sweeping visual overhaul of its website and desktop apps -- one that ditches the former iTunes-like appearance for a far more minimalist look, although all of the key elements remain in the same places as before. Naturally, that brings with it yet another software update for the desktop apps, although there's no word on any changes for its mobile apps just yet.

Report: RIM Might Look to Windows Phone 8 for Salvation [Rim]

Despite RIM CEO Thorsten Heins' bluster yesterday afternoon about how BlackBerry needs to stick with its own—hopelessly delayed—platform, Reuters reports that the company is indeed seeking out other options. Windows Phone 8, specifically. Which, uh, guys? Not sure how much that's gonna help. More »

Government-backed movie streaming service coming to China in Q4, bringing Paramount titles along

Governmentback ovie streaming partnership coming to China in Q4, brining Paramount movies with itGovernment-helmed China Movie Channel's site M1905 announced this week that it's joining forces with Jiaflix -- a consortium comprised of Hollywood-types like former Columbia exec Sid Ganis -- to launch a movie streaming service in China. The still unnamed offering is set to stream both Chinese and international films, including a deal struck with Paramount that will bring the studio's back catalog and future releases to the service. The fruits of the partnership are set to launch in the fourth quarter of this year, bringing streaming to a number of platforms, including smartphone and tablets. Jiaflix and China Movie Channel added that they'll have a plan in place to combat potential piracy through the service, but have yet to spell out what such a plan of action would entail.

Would You Wear a Deodorized Fart Pad? [Chatroom]

Did you know there's a pad that will apparently mask the scent of your farts? And sure, maybe it works, but could you take yourself seriously knowing you had this stuck to your ass? If your intestinal issues are such a problem, maybe you should just see a doctor? [Laughing Squid] More »

Line Grapefruit is a tricky Flash "path" game

linegrapefruit
Okay, see that snaking line coming in from the right on the screenshot? That's you. And see those large round circles? Those are supposedly grapefruits, only they won't sit still - they keep moving up and down and cutting across your path. And if you touch one, you die!

That's what you have to deal with in Line Grapefruit. But that's not all - you're also on a time limit. In fact, you have a very limited amount of time to make it through the "path" (for lack of a better word). You need to snake your way through the winding trail without touching anything. The good news is that a grapefruit only kills you if it touches the end of the line - once you've made it past the grapefruit, nothing happens if it crosses the path you've made.

This is not an easy game, but it's quite unique - I can't recall seeing another game quite like it.

AI System Learns to Recognize Faces and Felines

A neural network built over the years by researchers from Stanford University and Google has managed to teach itself to recognize faces and cats. The network consists of 16,000 processors on a cluster of 1,000 computers. After being exposed to 10 million images downloaded from the Internet, the network software learned to recognize human and cat faces, as well as human bodies, according to the researchers.

How Google Pulled Off Their Live Video Skydiving With Glasses Demo

google skydiveGoogle won the Internet by pulling off a truly impressive Google Glass skydiving stunt, twice, during their I/O event. Skydivers in wingsuits 4,000 feet above San Francisco delivered the high tech glasses to the Moscone stage in just four minutes, with help of 25 cameras, a zeppelin and a helicopter, stunt bikers and someone repelling down the side of the convention center. The whole thing was shown on live video in a Google Hangout from the skydivers' and bikers' glasses to the surprise of developers in the audience and those watching on YouTube. This was Google's winning answer to Steve Jobs' "One More Thing" and for the moment, it made Apple's ground-based surprises seem less dramatic.

Atari: celebrating 40 years on the dots

Atari celebrating 40 years on the dots

Forty years. That's a long time in the tech industry and Atari knows it. Today it celebrates four decades in the game, and quite the tale it is. Highs, lows and everything in between, Atari has been there. As one of the most influential brands both in gaming and technology, it only seems right to take a look over the company's history and chart some of the more significant twists in its less than straightforward journey. After the break we speak to the man that started it all and the one currently at the helm, as well as some of the many people whose lives were irreversibly changed by its influence. Happy birthday to you, Atari!

Automatically share photos you like directly to Facebook with the latest Instagram update

If you're a big user of both Facebook and Instagram, you may be interested -- or horrified -- to learn that the latest Instagram update gives you the option to automatically share photos that are liked in Instagram directly to your Facebook feed. Facebook acquired Instagram almost 3 months ago, so tighter integration between the two social networks wasn't unexpected. However, the shotgun-like way it's being handled could be more than a little unwelcome.
